Hydrogen will help Saudi Green Initiative reduce CO2 footprint by 109 tonnes – equivalent to planting over 4000 trees every year!

The positive impact of ANTISMOG hydrogen premix technology is most pronounced when a large fleet of heavy machinery, such as the mechanisms used in the oil&gas industry in Saudi dunes, is subjected to a robust preventive maintenance routine using ANTISMOG open-source 4-step process. Hydrogen technology is at the focus of the Saudi Green Initiative.

In this business impact simulation, made using ANTISMOG open-source ecological and economical impact modelling tool, for one of the flagship players in the sector, Saudi Green Initiative, the results indicate that the hydrogen premix technology will deliver the CO2 reduction to the mark of 109 metric tonnes per year, an equivalent to planting over 4000 trees every year! In addition to the CO2 reduction, the operating expenses will be reduced by €1.2M per year, thanks to the reduction of maintenance costs and additional fuel economy.

“The Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives are only a start. The Kingdom, the region and the world needs to go much further and faster in combatting climate change. Beginning this journey to a greener future has not been easy, but we are not avoiding tough choices. We reject the false choice between preserving the economy and protecting the environment.”

What is this Business Case?

From time to time we run a simulation of environmental impact and economic benefits for leading players in the Mobility sector. This allows us to validate and sharpen our tool in real-life scenarios. Often, these simulations provide a solid basis, a starting point, for an informed project discussion with our Clients.

Background of hydrogen for Saudi Green Initiative

With ambitious targets spanning the coming decades, the national initiative aims to improve quality of life and protect future generations by increasing reliance on clean energy, offsetting the impact of fossil fuels and protecting the environment. Through the Middle East Green Initiative, Saudi Arabia will spearhead regional efforts to achieve global targets to combat climate change.

What is the potential impact of hydrogen on the Saudi Green Initiative?

With a conservative assumption of the fleet composition of approximately 1,000 mechanisms, such as excavators, loaders, forklifts, and so on, and the share of mechanisms subjected to the hydrogen premix preventive maintenance program being 33%, the impact is calculated using ANTISMOG scenario modelling software. The impact of hydrogen premix preventive maintenance methodology is calculated based on two measurable and traceable changes:

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions due to more efficient combustion and less fuel being burned;
  • Reduction of operating costs due to reduction or even elimination of carbon deposits on the inside surfaces of the engine and exhaust components, the OPEX comprising, in turn, of two main economical components:
    • Reduction of maintenance costs;
    • Reduction of fuel consumption;

As per the simulation model, the hydrogen premix technology will deliver to the Saudi Green Initiative, or its clients, a CO2 reduction of 108,900 kg per year. To visualise this reduction of CO2 emissions, this amount of CO2 is the equivalent of planting over 4,000 trees, every year.

In addition to the CO2 reduction, the operating expenses will be reduced by nearly€1,2M per year. This number includes two main sources of savings, reduction of maintenance costs and reduction of fuel consumption.

The maintenance costs will be reduced by €554,400 per year, due to the elimination of problems related to the accumulation of carbon deposits on the inner surfaces of engines and exhaust components, such as EGR valves and diesel particulate filters.

Additionally, the fuel consumption will be reduced by an estimate of 5% due to cleaner engines and exhaust components, which will amount to the savings of €628,155 in fuel consumption per year.
